Hello everyone, my name
is Eloisa Vargas. I am 26 years old and was born and raised in Denver,
Colorado. It is a beautiful state and I am very happy to be able to go back any
chance that I have. When I was 19 I joined the Marine Corps and was stationed
in California, after I was released from duty my husband and I decided to stay
in California for awhile. During my time in California I completed my AA in
Social and Behavioral Science, during which I decided that I wanted to become an
Occupational Therapist in order to try and help combat veterans. We now live
here in Texas and are both presuing degrees from seperate universities.
When it comes to my fitness I would
most likely rate it an 8, I still run at least 3 times a week for more than 30
minutes, as well as doing some light to moderate weight training. One thing
that has become a large downfall for me when it comes to fitness and wellness
has been my love of sweets. I have finally after many attempts have taught
myself to moderate what kinds of foods I eat and trade out unhealthy options
for healthier more satisfying alternatives. In my opinion I would say that one
of the major problems within America today is obesity, I feel that people are
not educated in the ways that corporations use different tools in order to sell
people unhealthy foods. People are not being taught early enough about the health
benefits of exercise and correct diet, which later results in a greater
population of obesity and can lead to possible
death or disease.
I also love sweets, however my family lives a gluten free diet so it's difficult to avoid all these things. I do think obesity is a problem in America and I think our busy lifestyles makes it really frustrating to consume a healthy diet that is fresh. So much of our meals are from a box because we want things to be "fast." Also, obesity is more socially acceptable than drug addiction so it's not always comfortable bringing this subject up.
ReplyDeleteHi Eloisa!
ReplyDeleteI love Colorado. My husband has never been but from seeing pictures and me talking about it, he's ready to move there. Which part of California did you live and were you stationed in? I love your desire to help combat veterans. Being in the military yourself, I'm sure you'll make a wonderful occupational therapist one day.
Like you, I also love sweets. I do agree that America has a huge obesity problem, especially here in Texas. I absolutely believe that it's because people are not properly educated on the health benefits of proper exercise and proper diet. Many schools are filled with vending machines that don't have healthy options and it sets the tone for the rest of the child's life. Obesity is a more socially accepted taboo than drug addiction when both are detrimental to our health. My husband has been trying for years to lose weight and it's very difficult. I've done my best in cooking healthy meals, working out with him when I can, motivating him, but it really is an addiction and it's hard to break from it. It takes a ,lot of self control.

ReplyDeleteHello Eloisa,
DeleteIt is great that you made fitness a habit and I congratulate you on that. I need to get back on track with that. I saw the picture of the dog you want to get and he looks so cute! I also agree with you about obesity in America and it’s a major health concern that is preventable. I think that we are having a problem because whole food is being replaced by junk food.
Hello Eloisa Vargas.
ReplyDeleteYou look like have a wonderful plan; I also like to learn more about the Occupational Therapist. I have been a respiratory therapist since 2008, and also, I am almost done with my BAS. I like my job and I’m working at children’s hospital of Dallas in trauma ICU. But I’m wondering if in future I might switch to Occupational Therapist. I am not sure how that works and I like to learn more about your major. I also like to do exercise and taking care of my health but I cannot find enough time for that yet. I’m working two jobs and going to school. I have a kid and husband, I also taking care of my sick mother and I think that is more than enough for me, I’m hoping one day I can do more exercise and go to gym. At this time my fitness rate is 0. But I really watch my food and try to eat healthy. I love fruit and vegetable and I’m glad that you start eating healthy too. I agree with you that one of the major problems within America today is obesity. That need to be resolved and our new generation need to be train and learn to be healthy eater.

Colorado is beautiful. To date, I've only been there for business which was flying in to Aurora, going from distributor meetings, hotel and then back to the airport. I am very excited to be going to Estes Park in September for 4 days where I will finally be able to truly enjoy a piece of Colorado's beauty. Sorry you are having to endure the Texas heat!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about obesity and how lack of knowledge contributes to it. In my opinion, we are so "in a hurry" all the time that we opt for easy rather than healthy. My family is as guilty as the next too. Luckily, we have been making great strides in some serious changes the last couple of years and are at 50% clean eating now. We set our goal at 80/20 and even my 15 year old is on board.
Thank you for your service. I (the wife and sister of Marines) appreciate your sacrifice for our country.
Cheers!
